Mike Shirk NWWS
After 40 years as an advertising copywriter, Mike Shirk was diagnosed with a rare, untreatable muscle disease, Inclusion Body Myositis. His disability forced him into retirement in 1999. Mike took up watercolor painting, an activity he could manage despite his illness. One of his paintings, “Point Piños Light” is in the Permanent Art Collection of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. That painting was featured on the cover of the 2005 MDA Art Collection Calendar and was selected by The Forbes Galleries for an exhibit in their Picture Gallery on Fifth Avenue in New York. Mike's paintings have been accepted in numerous juried art competitions, includingthe San Diego Watercolor Society International Exhibition, Watercolor West, the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies and the Northwest Watercolor Society where he is a Signature Member. His painting, "Distant Memories," won the H.K. Holbein Award at Watercolor West. Mike is Past President and a Life Member of the San Diego Watercolor Society.
